Born in 1978, Luiz Gustavo Gonçalves has always had a passion for knives, and for that reason, he received his first knife from his uncle at the age of five. However, blades would take on a fundamental role in his life in 2010, when he attended an introductory bladesmithing course.
In 2012, after setting up a basic workshop, he began crafting his first pieces and participating in knife-making events. That same year, he won his first award, “Best New Maker,” at a show in Brazil. Many more awards followed, with the most recent being “Best Fighter” and “Best Kitchen Knife” at Blade Show Atlanta, in June 2025.
Guided by Eduardo Berardo (MS), he developed his work with a focus on high-performance knives, always paying close attention to technical aspects while also striving to enhance the aesthetic side, with a strong sense of proportion and harmony.
He earned his Journeyman Smith (JS) stamp in June 2016, in Atlanta.
At the end of 2017, he took classes with Barry Lee Hands, from whom he learned engraving and raised gold inlay techniques—skills he would revisit only five years later when he shifted his focus to more artistic knives, under the guidance of renowned Brazilian Mastersmith Rodrigo Sfreddo.
His dedication and continued efforts in developing the art of bladesmithing culminated in his unanimous approval for the Mastersmith title by the American Bladesmith Society in June 2025, when he was also honored with the B.R. Hughes Award for the best knife presented by a new Mastersmith.
